Creating content in NetSeries

To create a new test, lesson or survey you need to use Question Tools Editor Suite. This can create your content as a single file.

To create a content record within NetSeries press the New button, and then the Create Content button.

You can alter a wide variety of settings. When you make changes you must press the Change button, otherwise the new information you have entered will not be sent from your browser back to the NetSeries webserver.

Name. This is the text the user sees as the title of the test, lesson or survey. Underneath the name a user will usually see the Description you enter, or the Results Description text entered if results are being viewed.

Status. When Status is set to Draft then the content can be amended, and users/students/trainees/learners cannot see or take the test, survey or lesson. Once a test, lesson or survey has been set to Published it cannot be amended. NetTest and NetSurvey just have a Published option. NetResult and above have Published and Open and Published and Closed as options. Published and Open means that users can take a test, lesson or survey. Published and Closed means that users can see their results for this content, but can no longer start the test, lesson or survey.

Special Access determines whether users can access the survey, test or lesson without logging on.

Type. This determines how the results are treated. Quite a few of the settings for your content will have been set in Question Tools Editor Suite. The type setting determines how the NetSeries application treats the results. For tests, scores and other analyses are show. For surveys, just question analysis is displayed. For lessons, only the start and end times are shown.

If content is set to be a lesson then the record that is created for each user for that lesson does not count against the licence total of results collected (if this is the way your licence works). Lessons can be a useful way of delivering content and checking who has taken it without using any of your licensed records.

Once you change the status of the content to Publish it then you cannot alter the Type setting.

Attempts allowed determines how many times a logged-on user can attempt the test, lesson or survey. Users who attempt a test more than once have their highest scores are normally displayed in the results. If this figure is set to zero then there is no limit to the number of times the user can take the test. If guest access is selected then this setting is not effective, as it is not possible to know whether a guest user has taken a test or survey previously.

Results access can be set so that the user has no access, can view just the score, or can reopen a test and step through each question looking at marked answers. Note that the results access setting has no effect on what a user can and cannot see immediately after completing a test — these settings are determined when the content is created using Editor Suite.

Browse allows you to select the test, lesson or survey (package) file you have created using Editor Suite. If you select a .qtw file using Browse then it will be uploaded once you press the Change button.

The Start button simply gives you a chance to try out the content, which is particularly useful before you have published your test, lesson or survey. Any results you create as a tutor, learning manager or above will not be saved.

Owners determines which tutors have the right to edit the content record and view results from this item of content. This setting can be overridden if all tutors are allowed to view and edit all content (See Settings->Rights). All learning managers and above can see all content and results.
